Wetherby runners inspired by England’s exploits at the Commonwealth Games are being asked to consider clocking up funds for a leading older persons charity.
Wetherby in Support of the Elderly (WiSE) wants last minute sign-ups for the town’s 10k race next month, in a bid to raise vital funds for older people in the area.
Charity bosses say every runner raising sponsorship for WiSE will help to enhance the amount of work they are able to do.
Catherine, who looks after the community fundraising at WiSE, said: “Every time there’s a big athletics event on TV, I know lots of people reach for their running shoes and hit the streets. We’d love it if anyone inspired by this year’s Commonwealth Games considered running the Wetherby 10K for WiSE, so we can help even more isolated, older people right here in Wetherby.
“Our council funding allows us to deliver a basic level of provision to isolated, older people in desperate need of our help. But every single penny we raise beyond this means we can enhance our offering and do even more for older people in our community.”
The 17th Wetherby 10k takes place on Sunday 4 September at 2pm. Organised by Wetherby Runners AC, the gold-graded road race is open to everyone from total beginners to elite athletes. It follows a flat, scenic route and is enjoyed by more than 1,000 runners every year. Race fees this year go towards Leeds Mind.
Wetherby in Support of the Elderly (WiSE) is a registered charity organisation part funded by Leeds City Council. Its aim is to improve quality of life for the over 60s by providing community based activities, information, help and support. It was recently granted the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service for its work in the community.
