Walton Woman Helps 'Forgotten' Small Businesses With Free Marketing Training
By Rachel Bentley
A Wetherby mum found an innovative way to help the small business community during Covid-19 by taking her coaching business online to offer free marketing training.
Rachel Bentley, a mum of 2 and small business marketing coach from Walton, decided to help solo service providers who'd been forced to rethink their operations due to lockdown limitations for free.
Rachel says, "Health reasons prevented me helping neighbours in lockdown. Instead I drew on my expertise built over 33 years to provide forgotten business owners who were really struggling to cope in the pandemic, some simple skills in low cost marketing techniques to help protect their business.
"Over 200 people attended online at zero cost, and I’ve been overwhelmed by the feedback I received about the positive impact of this training, so I am running it for a third time week of 28 September due to demand."
The practical training was a few minutes a day over 5 days in an online group and helped participants create a one page action plan to help them get back to business.
With members from as far afield as Japan and Australia, as well as close to home, the support provided is set against a backdrop of small business owners feeling left behind.
Recent research by campaign group #ForgottenLtd shows that 90% of small business owners feel abandoned by the government amid the coronavirus outbreak.
Nearly half do not think they will survive more than three months - putting thousands of jobs at risk and financial ruin for independent business owners.
Rachel adds. "I have been approached by attendees who have come out of the other side of Covid-19 and expressed a need for cost effective support. I felt compelled to use my 33 years in marketing and sales to build a program for smaller businesses, including gentle accountability from me and a supportive group, to help achieve their goals and dreams. So I have set up a mentored group, to share the cost of coaching and mentoring, which begins at the end of August and is currently open for applications."
