Scammers target Wetherby residents

West Yorkshire Police would like to make you aware of a scam that has been taking place in the Wetherby area.



A man stating he is Detective Inspector Mason Greenwood has been ringing members of the public at their home address, stating he works for West Yorkshire Police or Yorkshire Police and that their son or nephew is currently in custody and he has their credit cards. The scammer knows the surname of the person they are calling. The caller advises that they can call 161 to verify his details. Luckily all of the people called have realised that it is a scam and have terminated the call.


West Yorkshire Police will not ring you and ask for any financial information and if you have any concerns about a caller purporting to be a police officer, please contact us on our non-emergency number of 101 and we can verify the details of an officer and whether they are currently on duty or not.


We are investigation these calls and wanted to make you aware of the scam for your information and awareness. There have been similar calls in the North Yorkshire Police area and they have published a warning on their website.
