Harrogate library launches celebrity story times

Famous faces in and around Harrogate are hosting virtual story times to share the joy of reading with families from the comfort of their sofas.

Staff at Harrogate library have come up with their own version; showcasing local key figures reading books of their choice.

“While our libraries are closed there are families out there who are missing weekly story times,” said Library Supervisor Abi Tanner and founder of the project.

“Seeing local celebrities makes people feel part of their community even when they are spending so much time at home without friends. It also shows reading can be enjoyed by everyone and engages with new audiences who may not normally use their local library.

“I’m grateful that so many local people have shown an interest in hosting a story time. We can’t wait to release more videos for you to enjoy on our Facebook page.”

The first story time was hosted by Channel 5’s Traffic Cops star and North Yorkshire Roads Policing Sergeant Paul Cording, who read Ducktective Quack and the Cake Crimewave.

Paul said: “As a parent I’m aware of how important it is for young people to learn through reading and at this time it’s important for their mental health. If I was able to engage even a few families then that’s a great result. I had a lot of fun doing it too.”

New videos will be posted on the Harrogate library Facebook page and will be available to view at any time.

County Councillor Greg White, Executive Member for Libraries, added: “In these unprecedented times we want to continue to engage with the public and share the joy of reading. Even though our libraries are closed the world of social media means we can still engage with the public.

“Reading is such a good way for children to learn and it’s never been so important to take care of our mental health. Stories can provide comfort and can help us find a little distraction during tough times. We look forward to sharing more videos with you.”
