Hatty racegoers to help fund the fight against brain tumours

Racegoers will help to raise awareness of brain tumours as Wetherby Racecourse backs the Brain Tumour Research charity’s national fundraising campaign.

For the eighth year running, Wetherby Racecourse is joining in Wear A Hat Day to help fund the fight against brain tumours. As the UK’s premier brain tumour awareness event, Wear A Hat Day sees individuals, families, schools and workplaces across the country donning their hats for the cause, and racegoers are leading the way in Wetherby.

On Friday 29 March the racecard will include a special Wear A Hat Day race and there will be prizes for the most hat-tastic headpieces as well as a raffle and a collection at the exits. Michelle Campbell, sales and marketing manager at Wetherby Racecourse, said: “Wear A Hat Day is a regular fixture here and we’re all looking forward to our eighth annual event. Racegoers come along is their most fabulous hats and help us to raise awareness of brain tumours and also vital funds towards research.

“We team up with a local brain tumour related charity called Will’s Way which sends volunteers to help with the collection and raffle, then all proceeds are split between the two charities. It’s an extremely important cause and we hope we can raise £2,500 so please come along and join in the fun!”

Brain tumours are indiscriminate; they can affect anyone at any age. What’s more, they kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer yet, historically, just 1% of the national spend on cancer research has been allocated to this devastating disease.

Wear A Hat Day has raised over a million pounds since Brain Tumour Research was launched 10 years ago and is the culmination of Brain Tumour Awareness month in March. Funds raised will develop the charity’s network of world-class brain tumour research centres in the UK where scientists are focused on improving outcomes for patients and, ultimately, finding a cure.

Matthew Price, community fundraising manager for Brain Tumour Research in the North East, said: “Wetherby Racecourse has been a loyal supporter of Wear A Hat Day for eight years; we are extremely grateful and thank everyone who has helped to make the event a success.

“There are many ways to get involved with Wear A Hat Day, whether it’s going along to Wetherby Racecourse on Friday 29 or hosting a bake sale at work or school, everyone can help us fund the fight against this devastating disease.”
