Manual Handling

Manual Handling is something that every employee does everyday in their job regardless of profession. What image does manual handling conjure up in your mind when you hear the term? Well, I guess it depends on what profession you are in, the type of company you work for, the task being undertaken, whether you work indoors or outdoors etc. Every individual you speak to in the workplace will have their own perception of what manual handling is, how it affects their daily life and whether they understand the health implications that poor manual handling can have on their overall well being. What health and well being implications can poor manual handling in the workplace have on your employees? Well there are numerous musculoskeletal disorders (MSD’s) which affects the muscles and joints of the body from head to toe strains, sprains, fractures poor posture stress both mental and physical loss of time from work through injury So what can you do to ensure that you successfully manage manual handling tasks in the workplace. A simple 1st answer to that would be to carry out a risk assessment. We ask our Clients to think of “TILE” when assessing manual handling in the workplace – T – Task I – Individual L – Load E – Environment So, how do you put “TILE” into practice? Well, its a relatively simple process TASK – look at the task, what does it involve? How can the task be done safely? Can manual manual handling be eliminated? Can it be carried out by mechanical means i.e. crane, slings, forklift, trolleys etc.? Individual – what is the capability of the individual? What health concerns or conditions do they have? What is their understanding of manual handling? Load – What is the load like? Is it large, small, heavy, light, hot, cold, sharp, smooth, irregularly shaped, difficult to hold? Environment – weather conditions – hot, cold, snow, ice, wind, rain. Is the work to be carried out indoors or outdoors, in plenty of space or in restricted space? These are all simple prompts and more importantly, they require you to look at the task in hand, to look at how you will eliminate where possible and manage manual handling to prevent injury and illness to your employee. Remember no job is ever so important that it cannot be done safely. If you haven’t assessed manual handling recently then maybe it’s time to do so…. SOURCE
